New adoption film: “Any Day Now”

There’s a new film about adoption opening in selected theatres around this country this Friday, called “Any Day Now.” It stars Alan Cumming, and it’s based on a true story from the 1970s about a gay couple who encounter difficulties adopting a boy with Down’s Syndrome who has been abandoned by his drug-addicted mother.

“There was something that drew me to this notion of this outsider trying to raise this child, trying to save this child — the Rudy character and the young boy being outsiders,” Fine says [in an article on the GA Voice], noting that he added the character of Paul, Rudy’s closeted partner, who was not in the original script.

“There was also something in the situation that moved me as a parent,” he says. “I wasn’t exactly quite sure why it spoke to me, but it did in a deep profound way.”

It’s winning film festival awards all across the country and its trailer shows a film that looks both powerful and moving. We can’t wait to see it.

If you live in New York, there are Q&As with Alan Cumming after a showings of the film at the Elinor Bunin Monroe Film Center, and Sunrise Theatres.

Take a look at the trailer, and check out this list of theatres across the country that are showing the film. Hopefully there’s a showing near you!
