Icebreakers and Creating Childhood Memories

Not only is it quite special to see adoption portrayed in mainstream media, but this commercial, produced by Cheerios, is so very touching all on its own. (A definite tear-jerker for adoptive parents.)

What it also does, is bring up a good point. When you’re meeting with your child for the first time, especially an older child, what do you bring to either break the ice or to bring a calming, soothing object into what could feel like a very foreign situation?

Think of traditions that were established when you were a child. Did you have a favorite blanket or stuffed animal? Or perhaps another object that become ingrained in the memories and experiences of your childhood? These special items are incredibly important, especially when you’re trying to create attachment between you and your new child. Whether it is a special snack or a more precious object, like a baby ring, think about what you would want that to be and the kinds of traditions you want to integrate into your family’s life.

Did you bring something as a gift when you met your new child? What was it? Did it become a prominent part of your child’s childhood?
