Are You Considering Adoption?

Pregnancy doesn’t always happen when planned, and sometimes the timing isn’t right. If this is the situation you’re in now, you have many choices to consider. We’re not here to tell you how to decide, but to offer information about adoption: a selfless decision to place your child with a family who can raise them with ample resources and support. It’s important that you explore all the options and speak with people you trust before making any decisions. You deserve time to process this information and choose what is best for you and your child.

If you know the child’s birth father, and you’re able to have a safe and supportive conversation, this is a great place to start. You can also communicate with a friend or loved one who can offer you an open ear and heart, and listen without judgment. Keep an open dialogue and express yourself honestly. If you aren’t ready to speak to your family, you are not alone. If you are looking for more information about adoption, you can reach out to us at One True Gift.  We have experienced adoption coordinators on hand 24/7 to listen, provide objective and confidential advice and support, share more about the process, and educate you on the next steps.

Should you decide that adoption is the best choice for you and your family, here are ways you can proceed:

  • Obtain stable healthcare. Ensuring that you and your child are healthy is an important way to start the adoption journey. If you are not sure of your healthcare options, you can visit Healthcare.gov to view your options by location.
  • Search for potential adoptive parents. You may know people or communities in your network who have information about families waiting to adopt. But this is also where we can assist you. We will help you begin the process, and here’s some more information about choosing the right adoptive family for your child.
  • Explore financial assistance options. Depending on the adoptive family you work with and your agreement—you may be able to obtain financial support directly from the family. If not, Child Welfare Gateway has options for adoption financial assistance broken down by state.

This is an incredibly emotional process, and if you’re exploring your options, you’re doing everything right. If you choose an adoption journey, we are here for you, no matter what you need. We’ve worked with birth mothers, birth families, and adoptive parents across the country and would love to support you throughout your journey.
