A beautiful homage to National Adoption Month

Today’s the last day of National Adoption Month, and we want to share this really incredible article written by Michael Piraino for the Huffington Post (which consistently posts inspiration articles and stories about adoption on their news site). Titled “National Adoption Month: A Time to Celebrate and to Educate,” Piraino appeals to the needs of children without families, reminding us of how many people consider adoption each year, how many children are waiting to be adopted, and how adoption has touched so many lives.

He describes children waiting to be adopted as reminiscent of Dr. Seuss’ waiting room imagery in his book, “Oh The Places You’ll Go:”

“Waiting for the fish to bite

or waiting for wind to fly a kite

or waiting around for Friday night

or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake

or a pot to boil, or a Better Break

or a string of pearls, or a pair of pants

or a wig with curls, or Another Chance.

Everyone is just waiting.”

He then reminds us:

“None of these children is waiting for a castle or a mansion. All they want is another chance. All they’re waiting for is a break. It was not their choice to be unable to live with their biological parents. It was not their choice to be removed from their families and to enter the foster care system. These children deserve a second chance at a happy, healthy permanent home.”

As people involved in the adoption industry, and as those who’ve been touched by adoption, this month reminds us that not only are we called to celebrate the miracle of adoption, but to educate others about how important it is, and to encourage those looking to expand their families to consider adoption. It’s a big world, filled with lots of children who don’t have families. Every day, we strive to make that number smaller. We hope you will commit to doing the same.
